For Your Pergola: Wood, Metal, Vinyl or Fiber Glass?

If you want to add more meaning into the picture, it is like adding beauty, charm and depth into your garden.  And when you want to do this, there’s nothing else that is able to give you what you most desire than a garden structure. Often made of different materials, these structures are famous nowadays and because of that, there are a lot you can choose ranging from small statues up to bigger structures like gazebo and garden pergolas. The material that will be used in these structures will depend on the structure itself.

As in the case of a pergola, it is often crafted from four materials- wood, metal, vinyl or fiber glass. Each of them offers a different style and charm along with its pros and cons. Though this is just a simple structure that’s made up of four posts and evenly spaced rafters for the roof structure, the material has to be taken into account as this will help determine the kind of look you want for your garden.

By far, the most common material used is wood and that may be because of its natural beauty that easily blends with any surrounding as well as the fact that it is easy to work with, thus, modifying its measurement is just a piece of cake should there be a need to do so. Another reason is perhaps its availability. Since this is a common material used for building structures, you can easily get it from any garden store near you. With this, you have to make sure that the wood you get is properly treated so as to withstand the weather and avoid rot. At the same time, you have a lot of reference if you need to do a research for what type of wood will work best for you.

Another popular material being utilized in making these structures is metal. Unlike wood, metal requires less maintenance because it already comes color-coated although you have to watch out for rust from time to time. Aside from that, there’s really nothing else you need to do once it’s up. Metal is also very much available in the market like wood but doing it yourself can be quite a challenge because when situation calls for modification, I’m pretty sure you’ll have a hard time looking for home tools or equipments to use with metals.

Equally popular materials used to build outdoor pergolas are vinyl and fiber glass. They are also available in DIY kits and unlike wood and metal, they are much lighter in weight. Aside from washing them regularly, they are maintenance-free. All you have to know is what color would suit your home best and you’re good to go. Like metal, putting them up yourself can be a challenge so think many times whether you will do it on your own or have a professional do it for you.
